Risiko pria terancam stroke yang fatal meningkat seirama dengan banyaknya lemak yang mereka simpan di kawasan seputar perut. Suatu pengkajian selama 23 tahun terhadap 9.151 orang membuktikan itu. Obesitas dan berat tubuh yang berlebihan mempertinggi faktor risiko gangguan jantung dan stroke.

Dalam laporannya di jurnal Stroke dikutip Selasa (29/10/2013), Dr. David Tanne dari Tel-Aviv University and the Chami Sheba Medical Center di Tel-Hashomer, Israel, mengatakan, mereka yang memiliki banyak lemak di bagian tengah tubuh, berisiko tinggi untuk meninggal karena stroke dibanding mereka yang lemaknya tersebar merata ke seluruh tubuh.

Dengan demikian, efek lemak seputar perut pada stroke tidak terkait dengan indeks massa tubuh (BMI) seseorang.
BMI adalah pengukuran berat tubuh ideal dengan memasukkan tinggi tubuh seseorang dalam perhitungan. Bila pendapat Dr Tane diikuti, BMI bukanlah alat ukur yang sempurna. Sebab, bisa saja terjadi orang yang sangat berotot dengan lemak tubuh normal akan memiliki BMI yang tinggi, sedang seseorang dengan lemak berlebihan dengan sedikit massa otot, akan masuk dalam kelompok yang memiliki BMI normal.

Dalam pengkajian Dr. Tane, pengukuran lemak perut yang lebih spesifik menghasilkan isyarat akan serangan stroke yang lebih baik dibanding BMI. "Bukan hanya keberadaan lemak tubuh yang berpengaruh terhadap risiko stroke, tetapi juga penyebarannya," papar Tanne.

Dalam penelitiannya, Dr. Tane merekrut 9.151 pria berusia paling muda 40 tahun. Di awal penelitian, berat, tinggi dan kadar lemak orang-orang itu diukur. Setelah 23 tahun, 316 di antara mereka meninggal karena stroke. Risiko seseorang terkena stroke semakin fatal sebanding dengan BMI mereka.

Namun, kadar lemak perut mereka menjadi isyarat paling jelas untuk risiko serangan stroke tersebut. Mereka yang lemak tubuhnya terpusat di perut, memiliki kemungkinan 50 persen lebih besar untuk meninggal karena stroke dibandingkan dengan yang lemaknya tersebar merata ke seluruh tubuh.
