Sistem operasi yang berjalan untuk platform PC ini pertama kali diperkenalkan pada 25 Oktober 2001. Berbagai pembaruan (update) keamanan dan dukungan lainnya secara bertahap dan konsisten telah diberikan oleh Microsoft. Namun pada 14 April 2009, Microsoft sudah mulai menghentikan dukungan teknis, klaim garansi, dan desain, akan tetapi update keamanan masih terus diberikan hingga pada akhirnya per 8 April 2014 semua itu telah dihentikan sepenuhnya.

Dengan keadaan ini, Microsoft mengimbau agar para pengguna PC yang masih menggunakan Windows XP untuk segera beralih ke sistem operasi yang lebih modern, Windows 7, 8 atau 8.1. Pasalnya tanpa dukungan patch dan update keamanan dari Microsoft, Windows XP justru akan menjadi bumerang yang membahayakan pengguna.

Tak hanya Microsoft, hal senada pun diperingatkan oleh sejumlah perusahaan kemanan komputasi seperti Trustwave dan Help AG. Keduanya kompak mengatakan bahwa dihentikannya patch dan update kemanan oleh Microsoft memungkinkan munculnya lubang (bug) keamanan pada Windows XP. Celah itu dapat dengan mudah dimanfaatkan oleh para hacker untuk mengeksploitasi berbagai hal yang ada pada PC pengguna.
